Lesson 15 Test taking strategies This lesson will show you how to think about the test taking strategies within the context of texts. This will help them prepare for writing summaries on their own for each text. The following passage provides an example of summarizing information after reading a text: "The soldier's death made him furious. 'So,' he said, 'you're the big dog who was going to bring his pals back to us. So much for your talk! You're a dead man!' He aimed his gun at the soldier's head and fired. As he turned away, he noticed that a bullet had hit the soldier's jaw. It hung open in a kind of grin." In this example, you can see how much information was summarized from the passage in order to explain what happened in one paragraph. In lessons from previous weeks, teachers have been helping students develop strategies for summarizing information when they write their summaries about texts. This example provides a great opportunity for students to practice these skills in a fun way related to summaries in texts. Students can be challenged to practice summarizing text in real life situations. They can be given a task such as to write out what they remember about an event like a race or a play.Once students have practiced summarizing information from texts, they will begin to see the value of this skill and it will become easier for them to do it on their own. Finally, the students should think about what information they want to remember before they read and then summarize any important information after reading. This allows them to later focus on writing summaries about the passage without worrying too much about word choice and grammar rules for summaries. Summarizing information from texts is only one way students can prepare for test-taking strategies. They can also be encouraged to make predictions before they read, become more familiar with the meaning of difficult words, and use the meaning of words in different contexts to help them understand their meanings more thoroughly. These are all examples of test-taking strategies that teachers should encourage students to use while reading.
